Thank you for your interest in joining the Board of Shelter.
Shelter exists to defend the right to a safe home – because home is everything. Our task is to overcome the housing emergency which stands in our way. We’re working towards creating a new generation of public housing, at rents that people on low incomes can afford. We need to shift the national conversation on public housing, rediscovering its radical origins and building a broad coalition of support for a new era of mass affordable housebuilding. With a mandate like that, we can begin to create the safe, high-quality and low-carbon homes we deserve, in the parts of the country where they are most needed.
The current housing system is unaffordable, unfit, unstable and discriminatory for far too many and the situation is now a national emergency. It is an indictment of years of failure that, across England and Scotland, as many as six million households are currently either denied the right to a safe home or are threatened with losing it.
I am proud of the commitment and achievements of all our staff and volunteers in the face of many challenges. Together we fight for those most at risk from the housing emergency, standing alongside individuals and communities with support and specialist legal advice, and through our campaigns for change. Above all we seek a transformation in housing policy, including investment in homes people on low incomes can actually afford. Our work has never been more vital.
We encourage applications from candidates who are motivated by and committed to our purpose, but are also excited by the scale and challenge of our strategic ambition. Our highest priority is to increase the diversity of background, life experience and thinking represented by the Board so that we more closely reflect the communities we work with and are opened up to new perspectives. Applications from individuals with lived experience of housing insecurity would be particularly welcome.
